Crunchbase: more money, fewer checks — the other side of a record funding year
In late October, Crunchbase News framed 2026 as a record year for total capital but a thinner one for the number of checks written. For the angel tier, that gap matters more than the headline total.

Crunchbase News published a three-chart analysis on the divide between 2026's record venture capital total and the actual number of deals funded. The message sits in the headline: more money, fewer checks. It is a market structure the lower tier — seed and angel rounds — experiences in the opposite direction from the headline totals.
The mechanism is simple. Totals rise on a small cluster of very large rounds, while a falling check count means any given company's odds of raising the next round are lower than before. For angel investors the consequence is not entry valuation but the graduation rate from seed to Series A.
