Southeast Asia in H1 2026: $7.25B raised, Malaysia closes in on Singapore, Philippines at 1.1%

Regional funding hit a four-year high, but the split between countries is sharply uneven — and the country moving up is the one with a state fund-of-funds.

A Tribune report dated Oct. 14, 2026, citing a study discussed by corporate venture arm Kickstart Ventures, put Southeast Asian startup funding at $7.25 billion in the first half of 2026 — the highest half-year value in four years. Over the same period the Philippines accounted for just 1.1% of the regional total.

At country level, DealStreetAsia's Oct. 12–17 weekly review said Malaysia's startup ecosystem ranked second in the region, behind only Singapore, by private capital raised in the first half of 2026; DealStreetAsia also announced the Malaysia Capital & Growth Summit 2027 in Kuala Lumpur on Jan. 28. Its Oct. 5–10 edition noted that Malaysian state fund-of-funds Jelawang Capital named two more managers under its Emerging Managers' Programme, including Superscrypt.

Vietnam does not appear in the top two positions in these reports, and Malaysia's clearest edge is not deal count but capital infrastructure: a state fund-of-funds that writes cheques to first-time managers. Three usable steps: (1) Vietnamese angel syndicates with three to five years of deal history should standardize their track record in the format regional LPs read — called capital, multiple on invested capital, vintage-by-vintage portfolio — so the file is ready if a similar programme opens in Vietnam or when approaching Malaysian and Singaporean LPs; (2) Jan. 28, 2027 in Kuala Lumpur is a lower-cost place to meet regional LPs than Singapore events, and belongs on the fundraising calendar; (3) when positioning a deal to foreign investors, benchmark directly against Malaysia rather than only Singapore, because the region's number-two slot is where the real contest now is.
