$16.9 million in a month: how US equity crowdfunding is contracting
September 2026 data from Crowdfund Capital Advisors shows every headline Regulation Crowdfunding metric down by double digits year on year - except the number of cheques written. That detail matters for anyone designing community capital channels in Vietnam.

US equity crowdfunding is one of the few capital markets with mandatory, public, monthly data. That makes it the best available thermometer for the bottom of the startup funding market, where companies are too small for venture capital. In September 2026 the reading dropped sharply.
A September down on every metric
Per Crowdfund Capital Advisors (CCA/CCLEAR) data compiled by Crowdfund Insider, September 2026 saw 48 new securities offerings, down 15.8% from August and 40.7% year on year. Closed deals totalled 41, down 44.6% month on month and 28.1% on the year. Commitments reached $16.9 million, down 25.5% monthly and 44.7% annually. Median issuer valuation was $16.1 million, down 15.8% monthly and 26.6% annually.
September was not an outlier. In May 2026 issuers raised just $9.7 million, down 59% from April's $23.6 million and 53.9% from May 2025, with 370 live offerings. Industry tracking put H1 2026 Reg CF volume at $139.5 million, below the prior-year half. CCA itself recommends reading this market on trailing 90-day flow rather than single months; on that basis, new commitments are down about 24% year on year.
More people, smaller cheques
““more investors are showing up, just with smaller amounts” - cheques written rose 16.6% while the average cheque fell 36%.”
This is the most important line in the dataset. Retail appetite has not vanished - participant counts actually rose. What fell is spending per participant and confidence in pricing: median valuations dropped by more than a quarter in a year. As venture capital moves upstream and concentrates on AI, small issuers are left with community capital as their main route to meaningful money - and that route is thinning in dollar terms.
The plumbing works; scale is the problem
Institutionally the framework still functions. As of 30 June 2026, US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) data recorded 9,851 Reg CF offerings filed since 2016, with about $1.64 billion in reported proceeds. FINRA-regulated funding portals hovered around 70 in September 2026. The issuer cap remains $5 million on a rolling 12-month basis, and a January 2026 petition asked the Commission to lift it to $20 million. The problem is not the pipe; it is the volume of water going through it.
For a ten-year-old market, $1.64 billion in total is modest next to any single quarter of global venture capital. Its value lies elsewhere: it is the only public dataset showing how hundreds of thousands of non-professional investors behave when allowed to buy private shares - and it says they are not retreating, they are shrinking cheques and marking prices down.
