Angel investment in 2026: a bigger market through a narrower door

The global angel investment market is projected to grow from roughly US$31 billion in 2025 to about US$34.5 billion in 2026, at a 12.5% compound annual growth rate through 2034. Yet in the same period, total capital into seed and angel rounds in Q2 2026 was just US$4.9 billion — down 27% year over year.

Why both numbers are true

Market-size figures count the total assets angels deploy, including small, off-record, unannounced deals. Seed-funding figures count only announced and recorded rounds. As the market grows quieter and smaller rounds go unannounced, the gap between the two widens.

A price floor has pushed angels out of foundational AI

Even the “smaller” rounds at frontier AI labs now start at US$500 million. That floor prices out virtually every angel syndicate from foundational AI. This is not a question of risk appetite — the cheque sizes simply no longer match.

Where angels are concentrating

• Healthtech, vertical-specific applied AI and sustainability are the three strongest magnets for angel capital.
• Environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria are now weighed seriously at first-round diligence.
