Southeast Asia's follow-on gap: median Series A slips to $8 million

DealStreetAsia, reporting from the Asia PE-VC Summit in Singapore, says Southeast Asia's venture capital market is facing a structural gap in follow-on funding even as headline values recover on the back of a few mega-deals. Senior executives from Vertex Holdings, Peak XV Partners, Jungle Ventures and Kickstart Ventures said the market is settling into a structurally smaller, more disciplined cycle after the 2020-22 capital overshoot. They were responding to the Kickstart Ventures and DealStreetAsia H1 2026 report, in which funding rose to $7.25 billion across 217 deals while transactions fell 7% to a multi-year low.

The follow-on gap is a direct risk for angel investors, not for funds. With the regional median Series A falling from $11.6 million to $8 million, three adjustments are actionable now: (1) hold reserve capital for a bridge instead of putting everything into the seed round — if the Series A is late, angel money is what keeps the company alive; (2) write pro-rata rights into seed documents, because in a more disciplined cycle Series A leads will tighten round capacity; (3) set the seed valuation cap so that a Series A around $8 million still prices as an up round — an overpriced seed is the most common reason Vietnamese companies stall when they go regional. For founders: build the cash plan assuming the Series A does not arrive for 18 months, and treat revenue as the only reliable fallback.
