Europe in Q3 2026: $25 billion, and capital spreading beyond the UK
Crunchbase data shows Europe's strongest quarter in four years, yet three quarters of the money went to AI and seed funding was flat — a concentration pattern Vietnam's ecosystem should read closely.

European startup funding in Q3 2026, up 77% from $14 billion in Q3 2025 (Crunchbase)
went to AI companies, or 75% of the region's total — the highest proportion on record
of seed capital across more than 750 European companies in the quarter, down quarter over quarter and flat year over year
European startups raised $25 billion in Q3 2026, their strongest quarter in four years and slightly above Q2's $24 billion, according to Crunchbase. The region accounted for 16% of global venture capital, in a quarter when global funding reached $159 billion with a record 27 rounds of $1 billion or more.
The centre is no longer only London
The UK still led with $7.5 billion, but the news is in the rest: Germany at $5 billion and France at $4.8 billion, each their strongest quarter since the 2021–early 2022 boom. Sweden ($1.5 billion), the Netherlands ($1.4 billion) and Spain ($1.2 billion) followed. Late-stage capital made up $17.3 billion of the quarterly total.
That shift rides on specific anchor companies, mostly in deep tech. Paris-based Mistral raised $3.5 billion — the largest venture round ever for a European company — at a valuation above $24 billion. Nscale raised a $3.36 billion convertible note, while German defence-tech firms Helsing and Quantum Systems raised $1.8 billion and $1.2 billion respectively. Four billion-dollar-plus fundings accounted for close to 40% of all capital raised in the region last quarter.
The seed layer is not moving with it
The most important part of the report is the quietest: European seed funding fell quarter over quarter and was flat year over year, with roughly $2 billion going into more than 750 companies. The largest seed round was London-based Callosum at $100 million, followed by Munich-based Microagi at $55 million. In short, the region's 77% jump barely touched the layer where angel investors operate.
Crunchbase also notes that Europe's real technological weight exceeds that 16% share, since many of its startups expand or relocate to the US to ride the growth of the AI market there. That is worth noting for every non-US ecosystem: funding may stay local, but the legal entity and the cap table often do not.
How to read a regional headline number
When four deals take nearly 40% of the total and one sector takes 75%, a regional headline stops measuring ecosystem health. A more useful indicator is the count of companies funded at seed — over 750 in Europe this quarter — because it describes the breadth of the pipeline, which determines how many deals an individual investor can actually join.
